study of Venus

  • Venus was the Roman goddess of love and the planet was named after her because it is the brightest of all the planets.
  • Venus is the second closest planet to the sun and is even hotter than Mercury even though it is further away.
  • Venus is the sixth largest planet and is very similar to the Earth in mass and size. It has other similar characteristics to the Earth in that they both have relatively few craters which means that they are young surfaces by comparison to the other planets.
  • Venus is the flattest planet in the solar system and turns the opposite way to practically all the other planets. The thick cloud cover around Venus rotates much faster than the planet itself -- once every four days. After the moon, Venus is the brightest object in the sky.
  • It is a rocky planet which is surrounded by thick yellow clouds which are made up of sulphuric acid which is poisonous.
  • Venus, like Mercury, has no moons and is usually visible with the naked eye.
  • The second planet from the sun bakes under twice as much solar radiation as Earth and reaches temperatures of 895 degrees Fahrenheit (480 degrees Celsius). Pressure from the dense atmosphere of sulfuric acid gas is about 95 times greater than Earth's and would crush a human.
