study of earth

  • The name Earth does not stem from Roman mythology as most of the planet's names do but comes from Old English and Germanic language.
  • The Earth is the third closest planet to the sun and the fifth largest planet.
  • It is small and rocky and as far as we know, the only planet that has life on it.
  • About three quarters of the Earth's surface is covered with water and it is the only planet on which water can exist in liquid form on the surface. This is the reason that life can be sustained on it.
  • The Earth is about 4.5 - 4.6 billion years old.
  • It is orbited by one moon.
  • the only planet in the universe known to support any kind of life.
  • The Earth formed when the initial molten lava mass cooled and formed a solid outer crust.
  • The Earth’s approximation to the sun and ability to absorb its solar energy allowed for photosynthesis to occur. This began the accumulation and storage of oxygen in the Earth’s atmosphere and the development of what we now know as the ozone layer. Early eukaryotic life on Earth soon followed.
