The Sun's name came from the Romans who called it Sol - Sol was the god of the sun. The Sun is the largest object in the solar system and is not a planet but the star around which all the nine planets circle (or orbit). Depending on how far away the planets are from the Sun determines how fast they move around it. The planets closest to the Sun are Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars. The planets furthest from the Sun are Neptune, Uranus, Jupiter, Pluto and Saturna large star whose strong magnetic fields cause other solar matter, mainly planets, asteroids, comets, meteoroids and other debris, to orbit around it.The solar energy from the Sun has supported and sustained terrestrial existence on Earth since the beginning of time.
