Environment Design(vector)

This is one of my illustration for environment design. To avoid making the illustration plain and to make the perspective of the illustration, I used a lot of gradations and different tones of colours. There will be four illustrations for environment.

Character Design (vector)

First of all I illustrate the illustration on the left I did not use any gradation and did not use many colours that’s why it looks really plain.

So I illustrate new one which
shown on the right with some colours and gradation to give the character life and more 3d like.
The right one looks living and more three demention.

Same as the sumrai illustration
on the left I used gradation to
create the shadow of the cloth
to make this illustration little bit
close to the real world.

drawing experiment

To start illustrating, I was concerning how to make
the atomosphere of Japan into my illustration.
When I draw Mt.Fuji without gradation, it looked
really plain and flat furthermore it did not look
Hokusai Manga style illustration or Japanese style
illustration even though I picked the colour from
Japanese traditional colours.
What I found when I look at some paintings of
Hokusai and Japanese woodblock printing, I
realised that they used some gradations. So I add
some gradation into my Mt.Fuji illustration then it
does not look plain anymore and the gradation
creates the atmosphere of three dementional as
well as Japanese atomosphere.

Hokusai manga

For development of my illustration, I decided to focus on the drawings of Hokusai Katsushika who is the one of the most famous Japanese artists in
the world.

I’ve searched some of his drawing espicially Hokusai Manga. It’s because traditional Japanese colours are used in the manga so these drawings (paintings) look authentic Japanese art.

In addition the sophisticated lines express the detail of the object so much. I’m going to try to get the atomosphere of Japan into the illustration even though I vevtorise all of the visual elements

Colour Scheme

To make the vector drawing
as Japanese as possible,
I chose colour scheme on
Japanese Traditional
colours
.These colours
shown on the right is just a
part of traditional colours.

Invitation design

It’s because the theme of this interactive is “invitation from Japan”, I have thought that to make invitation card for the entrance of the interactive. Then people can feel “Japan” from the interactive.
This wedding invitation shown on the left is simple but by using cherry blossoms as the element, it looks like Japanese style. Also I really like the Japanese style stamp on the bottom of the cherry blossom tree it makes the invitation even more Japanese.

From this invitation card, I learn that adding seasonal visual element is very important.

The style of two invitations which are middle one and the bottom one is authentic style invitations even though it’s very simple.

Samurai

Samurai is the term for the military nobility of pre-industrial Japan.
By the end of the 12th century, samurai became almost entirely synonymous with bushi, and the word was closely associated with the middle and upper echelons of the warrior class. The samurai followed a set of written rules called the Bushido. They numbered less than 10%
of Japan’s population. Samurai teachings can still be found today in modern day society with the martial art Kendo, meaning the way of the sword.

Geisha

Geisha , like all Japanese nouns, has no distinct singular or plural
variants. Another name for geisha used in Japan is geiko, which is
usually used to refer to geisha from Western Japan, including Kyoto.
The dance of the geisha has evolved from the dance performed on the kabuki stage. The “wild and outrageous” dances transformed into a more subtle, stylized, and controlled form of dance. It is extremely disciplined, similar to tai chi. Every dance uses gestures to tell a story and only a connoisseur can understand the subdued symbolism. For example, a tiny hand gesture represents reading love letter, holding the corner of a handkerchief in ones mouth represents coquetry and the long sleeves of the elaborate kimono are often used to symbolize dabbing tears. The dance sends a message of femininity but the small steps and the limited range of movements.

Ninja

A ninja or shinobi was a covert agent or mercenary of feudal Japan, specializing in unorthodox arts of war. The functions of the ninja included espionage, sabotage, infiltration, and assassination, as well as open combat in certain situations. The ninja, using covert methods of waging war, were contrasted with the samurai, who had strict rules about honor and combat.

The mysterious nature of the ninja has long captured popular
imagination in Japan, and later the rest of the world. Ninjas figure prominently in folklore and legend, and as a result it is often difficult to separate historical fact from myth. Some legendary abilities include invisibility, walking on water, and control over natural elements.

Sumo

Sumo is one of the most popular sports in Japan and Japan is the only country where it is practiced professionally. It is a sport where a wrestler (rikishi) attempts to force another wrestler out of a circular ring (dohyo) or to touch the ground with anything other
than the soles of the feet.

All sumo wrestlers take wrestling names called shikona, which may or may not be related to their real names. Often wrestlers have little choice in their name, which is given to them by their trainer (or stablemaster), or
by a supporter or family member who encouraged them into the sport.

This is particularly true of foreign-born wrestlers. A wrestler may change his wrestling name several times during his sumo career. The current trend is for more wrestlers, particularly native Japanese, to keep their
own name rather than change it.

Sumo wrestling is a strict hierarchy based on sporting merit. The wrestlers are ranked according to a system that dates back hundreds of
years, to the Edo period. Wrestlers are promoted or demoted according to their previous performance, and a carefully prepared banzuke listing the full hierarchy is published two weeks prior to each sumo tournament.

Kamizumo flash

バーチャル紙相撲
virtual kamizumo

Kamizumou (paper sumo) is a game which playing with sumo
wrestler shaped paper doll on table. To play Kamizumo, let the sumo
paper dolls stand on the dohyo(a circular ring) and vibrate the ring to
let the opponent’s doll fall down or out of the ring.
The idea of this game comes from Japanese martial arts “sumo”.
That;s why the basic role of this game is similar to sumo.
